Worcester,Mass., U.S.A. 1911.WE are glad to have in collected form <strong>the</strong> useful series <strong>of</strong>papers that Mr. Ramsden has been contributing to <strong>the</strong>Numismatist on <strong>the</strong> copper <strong>and</strong> brass coins <strong>of</strong> European fabric,which <strong>the</strong> Chinese Government has been trying to introducein <strong>the</strong> last ten years to displace <strong>the</strong> cast cash which havedone duty for centuries. It yet remains to be seen whe<strong>the</strong>r<strong>the</strong> experiment will be a success. This little book is wellillustrated, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> useful glossary <strong>and</strong> introductory notescontain all that is required by <strong>the</strong> student unacquainted withChinese. Though <strong>the</strong>y do not strictly fall within <strong>the</strong> scope<strong>of</strong> this book, Mr. Ramsden might have included <strong>the</strong> brassstruck Kwang-Tung cash <strong>of</strong> 1889, as forming an interestinglink between <strong>the</strong> old currency <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> coins here described.<strong>The</strong> author does not appear to have met with copper coins <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> Sze Chuan province. <strong>The</strong> British Museum possesses<strong>the</strong> 20 <strong>and</strong> 10 cash pieces in red copper <strong>and</strong> yellow brass, but<strong>the</strong>y are probably patterns.J. It is a treatise not only on <strong>the</strong>actual coinage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> two great English-speaking nations <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> world, but on all o<strong>the</strong>r matters relating to money from aneconomic point <strong>of</strong> view, including <strong>the</strong> history <strong>of</strong> paper currency<strong>and</strong> its effects, <strong>of</strong> banking, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> establishment <strong>of</strong> a goldst<strong>and</strong>ard in this country, <strong>of</strong> bimetallism, &c.<strong>The</strong> Author has divided her work into two separate parts:<strong>the</strong> first dealing with money in <strong>the</strong> British Empire <strong>the</strong>;second with its general history in <strong>the</strong> United States.<strong>The</strong> first section consists <strong>of</strong> a series <strong>of</strong> chapters on <strong>the</strong>English coinage, tracing its origin under Roman dominationon to <strong>the</strong> Anglo-Saxon <strong>and</strong> Early English periods; <strong>the</strong>ncethrough <strong>the</strong> rule <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Plantagenets, <strong>the</strong> Tudors, <strong>the</strong> Stuarts,to <strong>the</strong> present time, or ra<strong>the</strong>r to <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> reign <strong>of</strong>Ge<strong>org</strong>e III, since when it has remained on <strong>the</strong> same basis<strong>and</strong> in uninterrupted stability. In each chapter besides <strong>the</strong>history <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> coinage, a short account is supplied <strong>of</strong> itseconomic side ;that is, <strong>the</strong> value <strong>of</strong> money as a commodity,
