E.CRASTER.(i.)(See Plates XII.-XIX.)CORBRIDGE SECOND-CENTURY HOARD.FOR five years excavations have been proceeding, under<strong>the</strong> direction <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Corbridge Excavation Committee, on<strong>the</strong> site <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Roman town <strong>of</strong> Corstopitum,near Corbridge,in <strong>the</strong> county <strong>of</strong> Northumberl<strong>and</strong>. <strong>The</strong> season<strong>of</strong> 1911 was made memorable by <strong>the</strong> discovery, onSeptember 14, <strong>of</strong> a bronze jugwhich -was found tocontain one hundred <strong>and</strong> fifty-nine Roman aurei. <strong>The</strong>local associations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> find are not quite certain.Here,however, we are concerned only with <strong>the</strong> fact that, on<strong>the</strong> jug being lifted by <strong>the</strong> finders, <strong>the</strong> weight <strong>of</strong> itscontents, amounting to about four pounds, proved toogreat for <strong>the</strong> decayed bronze ;<strong>the</strong> bottom fell out, <strong>and</strong> a1This is Part I. <strong>of</strong> a paper on " Hoards <strong>of</strong> Roman Gold Coins foundin Britain," that is, hoards consisting wholly or largely <strong>of</strong> gold pieces.Part I., by Mr, Craster, deals with <strong>the</strong> two Corbridge finds.
