MISCELLANEA. 225I suggest that the former was struck after the Nasi piece.Simon and Eleazar began the revolt together. Eleazar on hiscoins styles himself " priest," irTDn "itt^N. Simon might wellstyle himself K 1^, " Prince." After his quarrel with Eleazar,he might then strike the Jerusalem pieces and be emboldenedat the end of the second year, as his influence grew stronger,to substitute his own name without any modifying title, ITSJO^.It will be instructive to find a large copper of this or similartype undated to make a parallel with the tetradrachm of therevolt. The denomination appears to be that of the Roman sestertius, though both the specimens which I possess are lighter thanRoman first brass, against which I have weighed them, whileMadden's weight of 568 grains seems impossibly heavy.EDGAR ROGERS.ROMAN COINS FROM ANGLESEY.THE following small find of Roman Republican and Imperialcoins, which I have been allowed by the kindness of LadyReade to examine, is perhaps worth putting on record. Theywere found together, all in one spot, while the foundations of"Western Heights" were being dug in the field called" Pare Stryd," Llanfaethlu, Anglesey, North Wales, some timein the seventies. In the lower part of the same field, I aminformed by Lady Reade, are still to be seen the remainsof a long trench, which could have served no agriculturalpurpose this and the name " ; stryd " may point, like thecoins, to Roman occupation. The coins are for the most part in rather bad condition ;but the latest issues (such as those of Domitian) owe theirstate rather to corrosion or external deposit than to wear.It is probable, therefore, that the little hoard was buriednot very long after A.D. 87, the date of issue of the latestcoins. The reduction of Anglesey was one of the first undertakingsof Agricola, and was completed by A.D. 80. This hoard mayhave belonged to one of his soldiers ;but it is just as likely, considering that it contains old coins of the kind whichcirculated in Britain among the natives long after they hadgone out of use in more civilized parts of the Empire, to havebeen a native's treasure.G.
