That is <strong>the</strong> " titre " <strong>of</strong> this coin.If Henry struck coins for his troops at Caenimmediately, he would probably have followed <strong>the</strong> type<strong>and</strong> weight <strong>of</strong> those th$n current <strong>the</strong>re. This demigrosis <strong>of</strong> a pure French type, without any modificationwhatever.This coin was, <strong>the</strong>refore, probably struck at Caenin September, 1417, immediately after its captureby Henry, <strong>and</strong> is <strong>the</strong> first piece issued by him inFrance.I think we may accept<strong>the</strong> Comte de Castellane'sreasoning. It will be recollected that <strong>the</strong> type <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>quart de gros ordered to be issued by<strong>the</strong> ordinance<strong>of</strong> September 25, 1419, was to be "similar to that<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> demi-gros." <strong>The</strong> quart de gros struck in pursuance<strong>of</strong> that ordinance is similar in type to this demigros,but with two very important modifications. <strong>The</strong>first is,that it bears an h in <strong>the</strong> centre as ordered by <strong>the</strong>ordinance, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> second is that in two <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> angleson <strong>the</strong> reverse are a crown <strong>and</strong> a leopard, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rtwo angles are empty.It might be argued that this demi-groswas struckat Kouen before September 25, 1419, but if thiswere <strong>the</strong> case, we should expect to find <strong>the</strong> crown <strong>and</strong>leopard in <strong>the</strong> angles <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> reverse, as on <strong>the</strong> quart degros, whereas we have two fleurs-de-lis <strong>and</strong> two crowns.<strong>The</strong> gros struck before September 25, 1419, also has
