A. Lawrencefor some time past has given special attention to the longcrosscoinage of Henry III, and I have no doubt, whenhe has completed his researches, that he will be able tothrow a good deal of light on the succession of the variousissues. Limited as it is, we are, however, able to extracta certain amount of evidence from this hoard.First of all, we will consider the institution of this socallednew coinage (nova moneta) of Henry III.Hawkins(Silver Coinage, ed. 1887, p. 195) says that " in 1248 anew coinage was issued having the cross on the reverseextending to the edge of the coin. Ending(Annals ofthe Coinage, Vol. i. p. 184) is more cautious, and he says,"Although the grant to the Earl of Cornwall bears dateon the 27th July, 1247, yet it appears that nothing wasdone until the following year, when the coins were foundto be so corrupted and debased by the clippers andcounterfeitersthat neither the English themselves nor
