F. series are alsovery carefully engraved.To sum up, I venture to suggest thata careful examinationof the portraits on both series of coins disclosesnothing which conflicts with the theory that arises fromsuch historical facts as are available, but on the contrarylends it much support, and I think we may safely holdthat the only Helena depicted on the coinage of theEoman Empireis the lady known to us as St. Helena.On p.130 of his work M. Maurice mentions a curiousand unique piece in the cabinet of Col. Voetter struckin the name of FL IVL HELENAE AVG with the reversetype GLORIA EXERCITVS, and suggests that itmay beattributable to Helena the wife of Julian.If this attributionwas correct it would be the onlyknown coinbearing the name of that lady. 2 M. Maurice doesnot illustrate it, but I venture to suggest that it is butan accidental combination of the obverse of the PAXPVBLICA type of 337 A.D., with a reverse which was thencommon but ceased to be issued before the reign ofJulian.It is well, perhaps, to add a word with reference tothe converse view to that of M. Maurice which hasbeen taken by some numismatists,viz. that the N. F.coins are those of St. Helena and the Augustan seriesthat of Helena the younger. The arguments againstthis view are similar to those urged against anattempt to divide the Augustan series between thetwo ladies. The use of the diadem in the one caseand its absence in the other are conclusive, and, as2Num. Chron., Series IV. Vol. X. p. 247 (1910).
HELENA N. F. 359above mentioned, the mint-marks prove that the Augus-of Helena, though not of Fausta, continuedtan seriesafter the deaths of Crispus and Fausta, when the youngerHelena must have fallen into obscurity. M. Mauriceshows this clearly, and it seems that the above-mentionedtheory is quite untenable.In selecting coins for illustration, I have, so far asspace will allow, included several specimens from suchmints as present any marked diversity in their treatmentof the portrait. These variations no doubt arise fromthe employment of several engravers. The reverse typesof Nos. 1, 26, and 27 are as shown in No. 1. Those ofNos. 2 to 24 inclusive and of No. 29 are as shown inNo. 2. No. 25 is of the PAX PVBLICA type, and No. 28is of the common type of the Empress Fausta with thelegend SALVS REIPVBLICAE.The following is a detailed list of the coins, themint-marks being exergual unless otherwise shown :HELENA N.
