COINS OF THE SELEUCID KINGS OF SYKIA. 249bow. In field r., cornucopiae ; 1., monogram,^j;below monogram, n. BAZIAEOZ (r.) ;ANTIOXOY (1.).JR. 0-7. Attic drachm. Wt. 52 grs.The portrait of Antiochus is barely idealized :[PI. X. 3.]this factand the characteristic appearance of the reverse suggestEastern workmanship, especially in the treatment of thebow, which is similar to bows appearing on Parthiancoins. Its peculiarity* consists in the position of thecornucopiae, and its interest lies in the monogram ^~j.I suggest that this is a barbarous imitation of A/ forAntioch, and M for Metropolis, and in connexion withthis that AN or Ai are merely barbarous imitations ofA/ and do not stand for any city whose name begins withA/, and that coinsbearing these monograms purport tobe minted at Antioch, while in fact they are really veryEastern workmanship or barbarous.
