Blood obviously is considered <strong>the</strong> most important biomaterial. For biomaterial o<strong>the</strong>r than<br />

venous blood, samples will meet several selection criteria:<br />

� The samples will provide major information in addition to that from blood samples in<br />

terms <strong>of</strong> physiologic coverage or coverage <strong>of</strong> organ systems (added value).<br />

� No major complications are expected with <strong>the</strong> collection <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> samples (feasibility).<br />

� There is no indication for a major (negative) impact on participation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> invited study<br />

subjects.<br />

� Samples can be processed and stored at appropriate costs.<br />

Different types <strong>of</strong> biosamples were considered. The reasons for including <strong>the</strong>m are listed in<br />

Table 3.11. Table 3.12 gives an overview <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> selected biosamples that shall be collected<br />

from all participants <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>National</strong> <strong>Cohort</strong>.<br />
