Description of the institutions responsible for establishing and operating the study
center
The German Cancer research Center (dkfz), the largest biomedical research center in
Germany, was established in Heidelberg in 1964. DKFZ’s long-term goal is to unravel the
causes and mechanisms of cancer and apply this knowledge to develop novel tools for diagnosis,
early detection, treatment, and prevention. The medical faculty of the university
of Heidelberg – the oldest university in Germany – is one of the largest and most prestigious
medical centers in Europe. The university hospital and the cooperating facilities in the region
offer inpatient and outpatient diagnostics and therapy for all severe diseases. All major
departments of the Medical Faculty of Heidelberg are located on the Biomedical Campus
Heidelberg in close proximity to DKFZ.
The division of Cancer Epidemiology at DKFZ studies the causes of cancer in population
groups with the aim of identifying and, if possible, avoiding risk factors so as to prevent cancer.
A wide range of epidemiologic studies have been successfully performed in the division.
Among them is the EPIC Heidelberg study, for which the DKFZ was responsible for recruiting
25,545 subjects aged 35–64 years at the baseline examination in 1994 to 1998. Direct
access to the population registries has been established for follow-up. Experienced staff
