C.1 Annex: Description <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> study centers<br />
The Medical Faculty and University Hospital are located in Halle (Saale), in <strong>the</strong> center <strong>of</strong><br />
Germany. With a history spanning over 300 years, it is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> oldest medical schools in<br />
Germany. Germany's first university hospital was founded here. All medical specialties and<br />
subspecialties are represented. The Medical Faculty Halle is currently focusing on <strong>the</strong> main<br />
subjects oncology/tumor biology and clinical epidemiologic care and rehabilitation research.<br />
The Medical Faculty is part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Martin Lu<strong>the</strong>r University Halle-Wittenberg, which is <strong>the</strong><br />
largest university in <strong>the</strong> state <strong>of</strong> Saxony-Anhalt. At present, more than 18,000 students are<br />
enrolled at <strong>the</strong> university, which encompasses over 190 courses <strong>of</strong> study in 18 faculties and<br />
departments.<br />
Description <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> study center Halle<br />
The city <strong>of</strong> Halle and <strong>the</strong> neighboring administrative district (Saalekreis) includes a population<br />
<strong>of</strong> about 440,000 inhabitants. The source population comprises about 300,000 inhabitants<br />
aged 20–69 years. In Halle 10,000 individuals will be recruited and will mainly comprise<br />
inhabitants <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> city <strong>of</strong> Halle and a subsample <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Saalekreis. The study center<br />
is located at <strong>the</strong> inner-city campus <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> University Hospitals <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Halle in<br />
vicinity <strong>of</strong> IKE and IMEBI and is easily accessible by <strong>the</strong> local public transport system. The<br />
study center will comprise rooms for investigation, interviews and preanalytical preparation<br />
and interim storage <strong>of</strong> biosamples (in total covering about 500 m²). Fur<strong>the</strong>rmore, very<br />
close to <strong>the</strong> study center, infrastructure is available for specialized examinationssuch as<br />
MRI. Currently, <strong>the</strong> study center is being renovated, incurring costs <strong>of</strong> about 650,000 € and<br />
funded by <strong>the</strong> state <strong>of</strong> Saxony-Anhalt. This renovation is going to be finalized by June 2011.<br />

center<br />
The University <strong>of</strong> Leipzig is <strong>the</strong> second oldest university in Germany. In its 600-year history<br />
a broad spectrum <strong>of</strong> scientific disciplines was established, with special emphasis on <strong>the</strong> humanities,<br />
natural sciences, and medicine. The university is dedicated to <strong>the</strong> pursuit <strong>of</strong> excellence<br />
in research and teaching. The Medical Faculty <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Leipzig is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
oldest in Germany, tightly interwoven with <strong>the</strong> university hospitals, it <strong>of</strong>fers comprehensive<br />
diagnostics and <strong>the</strong>rapy. With a central medical campus and several <strong>of</strong>f-campus institutions,<br />
