B.2.3.9.6 VERTICAL MODE INDICATOR<br />

This 2-bit (ME bits 14 — 15, Message bits 46 — 47) subfield shall be used to indicate whether the target altitude is in the<br />

process of being acquired (i.e., aircraft is climbing or descending toward the target altitude) or whether the target altitude<br />

has been acquired/being held. The Vertical <strong>Mode</strong> Indicator subfield shall be encoded as specified in the following table.<br />

B.2.3.9.7 Target Altitude<br />

This 10-bit (ME bits 16 — 25, Message bits 48 — 57) subfield shall be used to provide aircraft’s next intended level off<br />

altitude if in a climb or descent, or the aircraft current intended altitude if it is intending to hold its current altitude. The<br />

reported target altitude shall be the operational altitude recognized by the aircraft’s guidance system. The target altitude<br />

subfield shall be as specified in the following table.<br />
