"That," said a certa<strong>in</strong> friar, named John Brusierd,<br />

"was true <strong>in</strong> St. Paul's time, but not <strong>in</strong> ours: Christ<br />

was <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> one Mediator, for no one had yet been<br />

canonized, and <strong>the</strong>re were no sa<strong>in</strong>ts <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

calendar."[7] At ano<strong>the</strong>r time Bilney was asked by<br />

<strong>the</strong> same friar to solve <strong>the</strong> difficulty, how <strong>the</strong> Pope,<br />

who lived <strong>in</strong> his own house, could be "<strong>the</strong><br />

Antichrist, sitt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> temple <strong>of</strong> God as God?"<br />

"Do you know <strong>the</strong> Table <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ten<br />

Commandments?" asked Bilney. The friar replied<br />

that he did.<br />

"And do you know <strong>the</strong> constitutions devised by<br />

men, and bound on men under pa<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> death?" The<br />

friar gave a qualified confession <strong>of</strong> his knowledge<br />

<strong>of</strong> such constitutions.<br />

"It is written," said Bilney, "'The temple <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Lord is holy, which is you.' Therefore, <strong>the</strong><br />

conscience <strong>of</strong> man is <strong>the</strong> temple <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Holy Ghost.<br />
