him. Suddenly <strong>Henry</strong> pulled out a letter, and,<br />

hand<strong>in</strong>g it to Wolsey, said sharply, "Is not this your<br />

hand?"[11] The card<strong>in</strong>al's reply was not heard by<br />

<strong>the</strong> lords that filled <strong>the</strong> apartment, and who <strong>in</strong>tently<br />

watched <strong>the</strong> countenances <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> two; but <strong>the</strong> letter<br />

was understood to be an <strong>in</strong>tercepted one relat<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

<strong>the</strong> treaty which Wolsey had concluded with<br />

France, without <strong>the</strong> consent or knowledge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

k<strong>in</strong>g. The conversation lasted a few m<strong>in</strong>utes longer,<br />

and Wolsey was dismissed to d<strong>in</strong>ner, but not<br />

permitted to sleep under <strong>the</strong> same ro<strong>of</strong> with <strong>the</strong><br />

k<strong>in</strong>g. This was <strong>the</strong> last audience he ever had <strong>of</strong> his<br />

master, and Wolsey but too truly div<strong>in</strong>ed that <strong>the</strong><br />

star <strong>of</strong> his greatness had set. On <strong>the</strong> morrow <strong>the</strong><br />

two card<strong>in</strong>als set forth on <strong>the</strong>ir journey, Wolsey<br />

return<strong>in</strong>g to London, and Campeggio direct<strong>in</strong>g his<br />

steps towards his port <strong>of</strong> debarkation. At<br />

Dover,[12] his baggage was strictly searched, by<br />

<strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g's orders, for important papers, especially<br />

<strong>the</strong> decretal [13] annull<strong>in</strong>g his marriage, which<br />

<strong>Henry</strong> had been permitted to see, but not to touch.<br />

The decretal was not found, for this very sufficient<br />

reason, that <strong>the</strong> card<strong>in</strong>al, agreeably to <strong>in</strong>structions,<br />

had burned it. All o<strong>the</strong>r important documents were<br />
