found its way to Cambridge; and from <strong>the</strong> two<br />

universities it was <strong>in</strong> no long time diffused over <strong>the</strong><br />

whole k<strong>in</strong>gdom. This was <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> 1525, and<br />

<strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> 1526. The day had broken <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>England</strong> with <strong>the</strong> Greek and Lat<strong>in</strong> New Testament<br />

<strong>of</strong> Erasmus; now it was approach<strong>in</strong>g noontide<br />

splendor with Tyndale's English New Testament.<br />

We <strong>in</strong> this age f<strong>in</strong>d it impossible to realize <strong>the</strong><br />

transition that was now accomplished by <strong>the</strong> people<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>England</strong>. To <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong> publication <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Word <strong>of</strong><br />

God <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir own tongue was <strong>the</strong> lift<strong>in</strong>g up <strong>of</strong> a veil<br />

from a world <strong>of</strong> which before <strong>the</strong>y had heard tell,<br />

but which now <strong>the</strong>y saw. The wonder and<br />

ravishment with which <strong>the</strong>y gazed for <strong>the</strong> first time<br />

on objects so pure, so beautiful, and so<br />

transcendently majestic, and <strong>the</strong> delight with which<br />

<strong>the</strong>y were filled, we cannot at all conceive. There<br />

were narratives and doctr<strong>in</strong>es; <strong>the</strong>re were sermons<br />

and epistles; <strong>the</strong>re were <strong>in</strong>cidents and prayers; <strong>the</strong>re<br />

were miracles and apocalyptic visions; and <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

center <strong>of</strong> all <strong>the</strong>se glories, a majestic Personage, so<br />

human and yet so Div<strong>in</strong>e; not <strong>the</strong> terrible Judge<br />

which Rome had pa<strong>in</strong>ted him; but <strong>the</strong> Bro<strong>the</strong>r: very<br />
