<strong>the</strong> martyr to acquit <strong>the</strong>m <strong>of</strong> his death before <strong>the</strong><br />

people, lest <strong>the</strong>y should withhold <strong>the</strong>ir alms from<br />

<strong>the</strong>m. "Whereupon," says <strong>the</strong> chronicler, "<strong>the</strong> said<br />

Thomas Bilney spoke with a loud voice to <strong>the</strong><br />

people, and said, c I pray you, good people, be<br />

never worse to <strong>the</strong>se men for my sake, as though<br />

<strong>the</strong>y should be <strong>the</strong> authors <strong>of</strong> my death: it was not<br />

<strong>the</strong>y.' And so he ended."<br />

The <strong>of</strong>ficers now made <strong>in</strong>stant preparation for<br />

<strong>the</strong> execution. They piled up reeds and fagots about<br />

his body. The torch was applied to <strong>the</strong> reeds; <strong>the</strong><br />

fire readily caught, and, mount<strong>in</strong>g al<strong>of</strong>t with<br />

crackl<strong>in</strong>g noise, <strong>the</strong> flames enveloped <strong>the</strong> martyr,<br />

and blackened <strong>the</strong> sk<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> his face. Lift<strong>in</strong>g up his<br />

hands, and strik<strong>in</strong>g upon his breast, he cried at<br />

times, "Jesu," and aga<strong>in</strong>, "Credo." A great tempest<br />

<strong>of</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d, which had raged several days <strong>in</strong>flict<strong>in</strong>g<br />

great damage on <strong>the</strong> ripened corn-fields, was<br />

blow<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> time. Its violence parted <strong>the</strong> flames,<br />

and blow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m to ei<strong>the</strong>r side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sufferer, left<br />

full <strong>in</strong> sight <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> vast concourse <strong>the</strong> blackened<br />

and ghastly figure, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> martyr. This happened<br />
