St. Philip, <strong>the</strong> St. Luke, <strong>the</strong> St. John, <strong>the</strong> St. Mart<strong>in</strong>,<br />

fought with <strong>the</strong> Lion, <strong>the</strong> Bull, <strong>the</strong> Bear, <strong>the</strong> Tiger,<br />

<strong>the</strong> Dreadnought, <strong>the</strong> Revenge, <strong>the</strong> Victory, but<br />

<strong>the</strong>y could ga<strong>in</strong> no mastery over <strong>the</strong>ir unapostolical<br />

antagonists. In <strong>the</strong> carnal bus<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>of</strong> fight<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

superiority seemed to lie with <strong>the</strong> heretical<br />

combatants. The sides <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> orthodox galleons<br />

were pierced and riddled with <strong>the</strong> English shot,<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir masts cut or spl<strong>in</strong>tered, and <strong>the</strong>ir cordage torn;<br />

On <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g day (Friday) <strong>the</strong> procession<br />

up-channel was resumed, at <strong>the</strong> same slow pace<br />

and <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same order as before, <strong>the</strong> mighty<br />

Armada lead<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> van, and <strong>the</strong> humble English<br />

fleet follow<strong>in</strong>g. On <strong>the</strong> afternoon <strong>of</strong> Saturday <strong>the</strong><br />

Spaniards were <strong>of</strong>f Calais. It was here, or near to<br />

this, that Med<strong>in</strong>a Sidonia was to be jo<strong>in</strong>ed by <strong>the</strong><br />

Duke <strong>of</strong> Parma, with <strong>the</strong> fleet and army which he<br />
