Whilst listen<strong>in</strong>g to Cromwell, astonishment<br />

m<strong>in</strong>gled with <strong>the</strong> delight <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g: a new future<br />

seemed to be ris<strong>in</strong>g before himself and his<br />

k<strong>in</strong>gdom, and Cromwell proceeded to po<strong>in</strong>t out <strong>the</strong><br />

steps by which he would realize <strong>the</strong> great objects<br />

with which he had <strong>in</strong>spired him. The clergy, he<br />

showed him, were <strong>in</strong> his power already. Card<strong>in</strong>al<br />

Wolsey had pleaded guilty to <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>fraction <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

law <strong>of</strong> Praemunire, but <strong>the</strong> guilt <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> card<strong>in</strong>al was<br />

<strong>the</strong> guilt <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> whole body <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> clergy, for all <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>m had submitted to <strong>the</strong> Legant<strong>in</strong>e authority. All<br />

<strong>the</strong>refore had <strong>in</strong>curred <strong>the</strong> penalties <strong>of</strong> Praemunire;<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir persons and property were <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> power <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

k<strong>in</strong>g, and <strong>Henry</strong> must extend pardon to <strong>the</strong>m only<br />

on condition <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir vest<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> himself <strong>the</strong><br />

supremacy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church <strong>of</strong> <strong>England</strong>, now lodged<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pope. The k<strong>in</strong>g saw his path clearly, and<br />

with all <strong>the</strong> impetuosity and energy <strong>of</strong> his character<br />

he addressed himself to <strong>the</strong> prosecution <strong>of</strong> it. He<br />

aimed ma<strong>in</strong>ly at <strong>the</strong> Pope, but he would beg<strong>in</strong> at<br />
