<strong>of</strong> London, deprived <strong>of</strong> his see, had preceded <strong>the</strong><br />

archbishop to prison, as had also Rogers, for<br />

preach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Protestant sermon at St. Paul's.<br />

Latimer, <strong>the</strong> most eloquent preacher <strong>in</strong> all <strong>England</strong>;<br />

Hooper <strong>of</strong> Gloucester, who preached three or four<br />

times every day to his parishioners; Coverdale,<br />

Bradford, Saunders, and o<strong>the</strong>rs were deprived <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>ir liberty dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> months <strong>of</strong> August and<br />

A commission was issued to <strong>the</strong> new Bishops<br />

<strong>of</strong> W<strong>in</strong>chester, London, Chichester, and Durham--<br />

who, <strong>in</strong> addition to <strong>the</strong>ir detestation <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Protestantism</strong>, were soured <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir tempers by<br />

what had befallen <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> past reign--<br />

empower<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m to deprive <strong>the</strong> Protestant bishops<br />

and m<strong>in</strong>isters <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>of</strong>fices, on pretense ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong><br />

treason, or <strong>of</strong> heresy, or <strong>of</strong> marriage. They did <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

work with zeal and expedition. All <strong>the</strong> Protestant<br />

bishops were deprived, as also numbers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
