The queen requested <strong>the</strong> Pope to send Card<strong>in</strong>al<br />

Pole to <strong>England</strong>, with full powers to receive <strong>the</strong><br />

k<strong>in</strong>gdom <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> Roman pale. Julius III at once<br />

named Pole his legate, and dispatched him to<br />

<strong>England</strong> on <strong>the</strong> august errand <strong>of</strong> receiv<strong>in</strong>g back <strong>the</strong><br />

repentant nation.[2] The legate was <strong>the</strong> bearer <strong>of</strong> a<br />

The impatience <strong>of</strong> Pole to complete <strong>the</strong> task<br />

which had been put <strong>in</strong>to his hands was as great as<br />

that <strong>of</strong> Mary herself. But Gard<strong>in</strong>er and Bonner,<br />

more cautious though not less <strong>in</strong> earnest, and<br />

fear<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong> great project was be<strong>in</strong>g pushed on<br />

too rapidly, wrote to Charles V to delay Pole on his<br />

way through <strong>the</strong> Low Countries, till <strong>the</strong>y had<br />

prepared <strong>the</strong> way for his arrival. Pole, much aga<strong>in</strong>st<br />

his will, and not a little to his surprise and chagr<strong>in</strong>,<br />
