works <strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> converts <strong>of</strong> those times -<br />

"When Master Stafford read,<br />

And Master Latimer preached,<br />

Then was Cambridge blessed."[5]<br />

Similar scenes, though not on a scale quite so<br />

marked, were at this hour tak<strong>in</strong>g place <strong>in</strong> Oxford.<br />

Almost all <strong>the</strong> scholars whom Wolsey had brought<br />

to fill his new chairs ev<strong>in</strong>ced a favor for <strong>the</strong> new<br />

op<strong>in</strong>ions, or openly ranged <strong>the</strong>mselves on <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

side. Wolsey, <strong>in</strong> select<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> most learned, had<br />

unwitt<strong>in</strong>gly selected those most friendly to Reform.<br />

Besides Clark, whom we have already mentioned,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> new men, <strong>the</strong>re was John Fryth, <strong>the</strong> modest<br />

but stable-m<strong>in</strong>ded Christian, who had been<br />

Tyndale's associate <strong>in</strong> prepar<strong>in</strong>g an <strong>in</strong>strumentality<br />

which was dest<strong>in</strong>ed soon and powerfully to dispel<br />

<strong>the</strong> darkness that still rested above <strong>England</strong>, and<br />

which was only feebly relieved by <strong>the</strong> partial<br />

illum<strong>in</strong>ation that was break<strong>in</strong>g out at <strong>the</strong> two<br />

university seats <strong>of</strong> Cambridge and Oxford.<br />
