contact with foreign Protestants. Their arrival <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>England</strong> greatly streng<strong>the</strong>ned <strong>the</strong> hands <strong>of</strong> those<br />

who were labor<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> rebuild<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Protestant<br />

edifice. Among <strong>the</strong>se exiles was Jewell, a man <strong>of</strong><br />

matchless learn<strong>in</strong>g, which his powerful <strong>in</strong>tellect<br />

enabled him to wield with ease and grace, and who<br />

by his <strong>in</strong>comparable work, <strong>the</strong> Apology, followed<br />

as it was by <strong>the</strong> Defence, did more than any o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

man <strong>of</strong> that age to demonstrate <strong>the</strong> falsehood <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Popish system, and <strong>the</strong> impregnable foundations <strong>in</strong><br />

reason and truth on which <strong>the</strong> Protestant Church<br />

reposed. Its publication <strong>in</strong>vested <strong>the</strong> Reformed<br />

cause <strong>in</strong> <strong>England</strong> with a prestige it had lacked till<br />

<strong>the</strong>n. The arrival <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se men was signally<br />

opportune. The Marian bishops, with one<br />

exception, had vacated <strong>the</strong>ir sees--not, as <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

case <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Protestants under Mary, to go to prison<br />

or to martyrdom, but to retire on pensions, and live<br />

till <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir days <strong>in</strong> security and affluence.<br />

But <strong>the</strong> embarrassment <strong>in</strong>to which <strong>the</strong>y expected<br />

<strong>the</strong> Government would be thrown by <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

resignation was obviated by <strong>the</strong> appo<strong>in</strong>tment to <strong>the</strong><br />

vacant posts <strong>of</strong> men who, even <strong>the</strong>y were<br />

compelled to acknowledge, were <strong>the</strong>ir superiors <strong>in</strong><br />
