plausibility and at times with eloquence, attack<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>Protestantism</strong> and <strong>in</strong>still<strong>in</strong>g sedition; and <strong>the</strong>se<br />

works had <strong>the</strong> greater <strong>in</strong>fluence, that <strong>the</strong>y had come<br />

no man knew whi<strong>the</strong>r, save that <strong>the</strong>y issued out <strong>of</strong><br />

a mysterious darkness.<br />

The impatience <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se men to see <strong>England</strong> a<br />

Popish country would not permit <strong>the</strong>m to wait <strong>the</strong><br />

realization <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir hopes by <strong>the</strong> slow process <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>struction and perversion. Some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m carried<br />

more powerful weapons for effect<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

enterprise than rosaries and catechisms. They came<br />

armed with stilettos and curious poisons, and <strong>the</strong>y<br />

plunged <strong>in</strong>to plot after plot aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> queen's life.<br />

These mach<strong>in</strong>ations kept her <strong>in</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ual<br />

apprehension and anxiety, and <strong>the</strong> nation <strong>in</strong><br />

perpetual alarm. Their grand project, <strong>the</strong>y felt, was<br />

hopeless while Elizabeth lived; and not be<strong>in</strong>g able<br />

to wait till age should enfeeble her, or death make<br />

vacant her throne, <strong>the</strong>y watched <strong>the</strong>ir opportunity<br />
