crossed <strong>the</strong> bay, and were <strong>of</strong>f Ushant. A second<br />

and severer storm here burst on <strong>the</strong>m. The waves,<br />

dash<strong>in</strong>g aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> l<strong>of</strong>ty turrets at stem and stern,<br />

sent a spout <strong>of</strong> white water up <strong>the</strong>ir sides and high<br />

<strong>in</strong>to mid-air, while <strong>the</strong> rac<strong>in</strong>g waves, cours<strong>in</strong>g<br />

across <strong>the</strong> low bulwarks amidships, threatened<br />

every moment to engulf <strong>the</strong> galleons. One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

greatest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m went down with all on board, and<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r two were driven on <strong>the</strong> shore <strong>of</strong> France. In<br />

<strong>the</strong> case <strong>of</strong> a fourth this tempest brought liberty on<br />

its w<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> galley-slaves aboard <strong>of</strong> it, among<br />

whom was David Gw<strong>in</strong>, who had been taken<br />

captive by <strong>the</strong> Spaniards, and had passed eleven<br />

doleful years on board <strong>the</strong>ir galleys.[3] The storm<br />

subsid<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong> Armada once more ga<strong>the</strong>red itself<br />

toge<strong>the</strong>r, and sett<strong>in</strong>g sail entered <strong>the</strong> Channel, and<br />

on <strong>the</strong> 29th <strong>of</strong> July was <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong> Lizard.[4] Next day<br />

<strong>England</strong> had her first sight <strong>of</strong> her long-expected<br />

enemy, com<strong>in</strong>g over <strong>the</strong> blue sea, her own element,<br />

to conquer her. Instantly <strong>the</strong> beacon-fires were<br />

k<strong>in</strong>dled, and blaz<strong>in</strong>g along <strong>the</strong> coast and away <strong>in</strong>to<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>land, announced alike to dweller <strong>in</strong> city and<br />
