obta<strong>in</strong>ed an audience <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bishop, but only to<br />

have his hopes dashed. "My house is already full,"<br />

said <strong>the</strong> bishop coldly. He turned away: <strong>the</strong>re was<br />

no room for him <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Episcopal palace to<br />

translate <strong>the</strong> Scriptures. But if <strong>the</strong> doors <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

bishop's palace were closed aga<strong>in</strong>st him, <strong>the</strong> door<br />

<strong>of</strong> a rich London merchant was now opened for his<br />

reception, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g manner.<br />

ready to show hospitality to poor disciples for <strong>the</strong><br />

Gospel's sake. He took up his abode <strong>in</strong><br />

Monmouth's house; he lived abstemiously [9] at a<br />

table loaded with delicacies; and he studied night<br />

and day, be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>tent on k<strong>in</strong>dl<strong>in</strong>g a torch that<br />

should illum<strong>in</strong>ate <strong>England</strong>. Eager to f<strong>in</strong>ish, he<br />
