was <strong>in</strong> excess <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lay members <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Upper<br />

Houses.[19] In Yorkshire, where <strong>the</strong> monks had<br />

many sympathizers, who regarded <strong>the</strong> dissolution<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir houses as at once an impiety and a robbery,<br />

this much-needed reformation provoked an<br />

<strong>in</strong>surrection which at first threatened to be<br />

formidable, but was eventually suppressed without<br />

much difficulty.<br />

Some few <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> monasteries cont<strong>in</strong>ued to <strong>the</strong><br />

close to fulfill <strong>the</strong> ends <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>stitution. They<br />

cultivated a little learn<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong>y practiced a little<br />

medic<strong>in</strong>e, and <strong>the</strong>y exercised a little charity. The<br />

orphan and <strong>the</strong> outcast found asylum with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

walls, and <strong>the</strong> destitute and <strong>the</strong> decayed tradesman<br />

participated <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> alms which were distributed at<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir threshold. The traveler, when he heard <strong>the</strong><br />

vesper bell, turned aside to sleep <strong>in</strong> safety under<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir ro<strong>of</strong>, and aga<strong>in</strong> set forth when <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

star appeared. But <strong>the</strong> majority <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se places had<br />

scandalously perverted <strong>the</strong>ir ways, and were simply<br />

nurseries <strong>of</strong> superstition and <strong>in</strong>dolence, and <strong>of</strong> all<br />

<strong>the</strong> evils that are born <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se two. Never<strong>the</strong>less,<br />
