[144] food & drink
the eat well
Fresh, creative food, with ridiculously good bread, from an eatery that loves to give back to the community
WHERE IS IT? A short drive from
Cape May, just west of the corner of
Bayshore Road and Town Bank Road.
WHY SHOULD I GO? A love
for both cooking and community
inspired Drew Gandley to open The
Eat Well five years ago. This selftaught
chef started out in the front
of house of restaurants while living
in New Orleans, but always had a
passion for cooking. When he and
wife Martha moved to the area, he
wanted to find a place where he
could do what he loved for the rest
of his years. “As long as it doesn’t
feel like a job, I’ll do it,” Drew says.
The small, year-round café offers
a simple menu packed with fresh
food and a lot of flavor. Drew bakes
all of his artisan bread inhouse. His
Cuban/Reuben Fusion sandwich is
one of the highlights — he cures his
own pastrami and corned beef to
ensure everything is of the highest
quality.
The Eat Well gives back to the
community whenever possible. Drew
began a pay-what-you-can promotion
to benefit kids who are hungry after
school. Kids can stop in any time
during opening hours to grab a
grilled cheese with tomato soup and
he’ll accept what they can afford.
INSIDER TIP The Eat Well caters
small gatherings and offers at-home
baking and pizza-making classes to
share their love of cooking with the
community.
