Don Pocher
renovated. It is the only excursion house at Cape
May proper.
The Star Villa is a new and attractive house
built since last season. It is located on Ocean
street, near Beach avenue and has a frontage of 80
feet and depth of 135 feet, containing 50 rooms. It
has all the modern conveniences and is first-class
in its appointments. Mr J. C. Garwood, late of the
Baltimore House, is lessee.
The Brexton Villa is one of the coziest houses
– or rather series of houses, for it combines five
villas joined in one – on the island. It is eligibly
located and has a fine ocean view. Mrs J. A. Myers,
the proprietress, is a well-known Baltimore lady,
and formerly kept the Brexton in that city. Mr
Hanway, president of the first branch city council,
has secured quarters at the Brexton Villa for his
family during the season.
The Marine Villa, one of the best-known
houses at Cape May, is in charge of Miss Harrison,
of Baltimore, this year, and has a large Baltimore
patronage. The location (near the beach) is delightful
and the appointments first-class.
The Hotel Lafayette, located opposite the iron
pier, continues under the management of Mr F. H.
Hildreth. It is located on Beach Avenue, and is one
of the finest houses on the coast.
Cottage life is a feature of Cape May, and board
can be obtained at the various boarding cottages
at moderate rates, with as good fare as at the
hotels. The cottages are generally large and roomy,
well located and well kept. Mrs M. J. Hubball, of
Washington, and who formerly kept the Highland
Park Hotel, near Baltimore, this year is proprietress
of the McCollum House, on Hughes street. Mrs
F. L. Richardson continues at the head of Carroll
Villa, one of the coziest houses on the island. The
Williamson cottage, on Lafayette avenue, kept by
Mrs E. H. Williamson, is a favorite house.
