This 1890 map
of Cape May
shows that the
area’s natural
beauty was not
overlooked,
even in the
Victorian days
Cape May Point
State Park
also expected to make his pocket swell at the end of
the season. There has not been much bathing yet,
except by excursionists, but the water is becoming
pleasant, and soon a dip in the surf will be the order
of the day.
There are but few places along the coast which
can rival Cape May for well-regulated and commodious
hotels. The Stockton, so well and popularly
known, will be in charge this season of Mr
A. L. Mellen, of the St James Hotel, Baltimore. Mr
Mellen has secured the services of Mr D. Pinknew
West, the well-known Baltimore detective, who
will have charge of the police arrangements of
the house. He also engaged Andrew Nevtis,
well known as “Andy,” formerly of Guy’s Hotel,
Baltimore, and now of the Colonnade, Philadelphia,
to take charge of the bar connected with the
Stockton.
Congress Hall, a popular house for Baltimoreans,
is again in charge of Colonel Duffy, who is well and
favorably known to visitors generally to Cape May.
He has made a number of improvements to the
house, which is now in first-class order.
The New Columbia is conducted by Mr James D.
McClellan, formerly of the Logan House, Altoona,
PA, and who kept the Stockton, Cape May, last
summer. It is a fine brick structure, and one of the
most substantial along the coast.
The Windsor, of which Mr Walter W. Green is
proprietor, is located directly on the beach, and is
one of the coziest and most home-like hotels found
anywhere.
The Arlington, the well-known Baltimore
house, continues under the popular management
of Mr John J. Kromer, who is a former well-known
Baltimorean. The Arlington has undergone a number
of improvements.
The Arctic House, also popular with Baltimore
people, is under new management this year. Mr A.
E. Lyons, the present proprietor, was formerly proprietor
of Cresson Springs Hotel, PA, and kept the
New Columbia, Cape May, last winter. He has had
eighteen years experience in the hotel business.
The West End Hotel, kept by Mr L. E. Johnson,
is pleasantly located, and is largely patronized by
Baltimoreans.
The many friends of ex-Mayor F. J. Melvin
will find him in a new role this year. Mr Melvin
has made a good mayor, and thinks he can keep a
hotel. He will be found at the Sea Breeze hotel. The
house has been greatly improved and completely
