1.0 PURPOSE<br />

To outline the procedure for lifesaving services to secure a helicopter landing zone.<br />

2.0 SCOPE<br />

This procedure applies to all operational services. For detailed local responses, refer to CSOPs.<br />

3.0 REQUIREMENTS<br />

Nil<br />

Training<br />

Training of helicopter safety and landing zones (LZ) is taught<br />

at the <strong>National</strong> Lifeguard School. All surf lifeguards tasked<br />

with setting up and supervising the LZ need to be thoroughly<br />

briefed.<br />

Other<br />

All surflLifeguards should be in lifeguard uniform.<br />

4.0 PROCEDURES<br />

All lifesaving personnel shall be aware of helicopter safety. The pilot will have final and<br />

ultimate decision on whether and where to land.<br />

ESTABLISHING A LANDING ZONE<br />

4.1 Nominate a suitable lifesaver/lifeguard to manage the Landing Zone.<br />

4.2 Locate a flat area of land 40m by 40m (at least).<br />

4.3 Clear area of all people/animals.<br />

4.4 Remove all loose objects (umbrellas, surfboards, tents, etc.).<br />

4.5 Ensure all access points to the LZ are manned by lifesavers (preventing public<br />

access), facing outward to view hazards.<br />
