ass—or rather Przhevalski's horse— , a lion with a bird on his back, all<br />

fac<strong>in</strong>g left, <strong>and</strong> a second bull fac<strong>in</strong>g right : <strong>in</strong> the second row, a wild<br />

boar, a panther, <strong>and</strong> two antelopes, all fac<strong>in</strong>g left. The streams of the<br />

rivers are partly concealed by the bodies of the animals.<br />

The second vase (pi. Ill, 3-4) is of nearly the same shape, but the<br />

neck is narrower <strong>and</strong> longer. The bottom is occupied by a large rosette.<br />

ENGRAVINGS ON THE MAIKOP VASE<br />

which consists pf three rows, one above the other, of round leaves<br />

placed crosswise, the same type of rosette as those which were sewn<br />

to the diadems of Maikop <strong>and</strong> Staromyshastovskaya. The whole body<br />

of the vase above the bottom is filled with a row of five animals <strong>and</strong><br />

of three birds, all fac<strong>in</strong>g left : an antelope, a bull, a panther, a bird,<br />

<strong>and</strong> an antelope <strong>and</strong> a panther with birds on their backs. Below the<br />

neck of the vase is a narrow hatched strip.<br />

The shape of both vases, <strong>in</strong> its ma<strong>in</strong> l<strong>in</strong>es, recalls the celebrated<br />

Entemena vase found at Tello. The technique is the same, each vase
