was made <strong>in</strong> the steppes. A trench, often of considerable size, was<br />

then dug <strong>in</strong> the virg<strong>in</strong> soil, with a corridor slop<strong>in</strong>g down to it. Beams<br />

were placed along the walls of the trench <strong>and</strong> of the corridor : the<br />

trench was covered with a conical, <strong>and</strong> the corridor with a gabled roof.<br />

The roof of the tomb chamber was also supported by strong beams<br />

planted <strong>in</strong> the middle of the trench. The cubical frame of the tomb<br />

was probably l<strong>in</strong>ed with mats <strong>and</strong> rugs, so as to make an almost exact<br />

copy of a nomadic tent. - Under the tent, another smaller one was<br />

sometimes constructed to conta<strong>in</strong> the body of the chief <strong>and</strong> the<br />

treasures which were buried with him. In the fourth century, under<br />

Greek <strong>in</strong>fluence, this tent was replaced by a chamber of dressed stone<br />

with a wooden roof. Round the central tent conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the chief's<br />

body, other skeletons are nearly always found, sometimes female, but<br />

usually male, the female richly adorned, the male unadorned but<br />

furnished with weapons. Round the chamber, on the edge of the<br />

trench, bodies of horses,, sometimes several hundreds, were disposed<br />

<strong>in</strong> regular order. In the Ulski tumulus (fig. 4) the bodies of the horses<br />

were grouped round the pillars of the tent, with wooden structures,
