three times the cost of a regular edition. Special editions of <strong>DVD</strong>s are even<br />

more common and more popular than those on laserdisc, yet the price typically<br />

is increased by only $10 or so, if at all.<br />

Beyond <strong>DVD</strong>-Video and <strong>DVD</strong>-Audio Features<br />

<strong>DVD</strong>s can contain much more than the limited selection supported by home<br />

<strong>DVD</strong> players. Computer software such as screen savers, games, and interactive<br />

enhancements can be included. Along with standard <strong>DVD</strong> computers,<br />

home video game systems and Internet WebTV boxes can support<br />

enhanced features. A single <strong>DVD</strong> could contain a movie, a video game based<br />

on the movie, an annotated screenplay with hotlinks to related scenes and<br />

storyboards, the searchable text of the novelization complete with illustrations<br />

and hyperlinks. In addition, it could contain links to Internet Web<br />

sites with more information, fan discussion forums, related merchandise,<br />

<strong>DVD</strong> is becoming the most common component of multipurpose set-top<br />

boxes, such as a combination digital video recorder, cable TV receiver, and<br />

<strong>DVD</strong> player/recorder, or a video game console that is also a <strong>DVD</strong> player and<br />

a Web browser.<br />

<strong>DVD</strong> Myths<br />

Numerous myths have evolved concerning <strong>DVD</strong>. Apparently, some people<br />

had nothing better to do while waiting for it to appear than to sit around<br />

and misconstrue its characteristics. Some myths quickly met their deserved<br />

deaths once <strong>DVD</strong> proved itself, but many others continue to circulate, like<br />

urban legends of microwaved cats and kidney thefts. This section deals with<br />

the most common misperceptions of <strong>DVD</strong>.<br />

Myth: “<strong>DVD</strong> Is Revolutionary”<br />

<strong>DVD</strong> is evolutionary, not revolutionary. The printing press was revolutionary.<br />

Television was revolutionary. Even CDs can be considered revolutionary<br />

because they were a completely new way of storing digital audio and computer<br />

data on a compact optical disc. But <strong>DVD</strong> is not fundamentally more<br />

than the evolution of CD and the refinement of Video CD. Other than digital
