Application Details: DVD-Video and DVD-Audio
DVD-SR uses the same general structure as DVD-Video but much simplified.
Data is stored in stream recording objects (SROs). Instead of recording
video packs, audio packs, subpicture packs, and so on, DVD-SR records
only application data packs. Incoming data, such as MPEG transport
streams, MPEG program streams, Microsoft ASF streams, and so forth, is
chopped into 1998-byte chunks and wrapped in packs. If the recorder is
designed to recognize high-level information in the incoming stream, such
as timestamps, it can generate additional navigation data to support
searching and trick play (fast forward, reverse, slow, and so on).
DVD-SR content can be mixed with DVD-VR content. They can share
play lists and can have mixed program chains that include both VR cells
and SR cells. Draft versions of the DVD-SR format defined streaming
objects, or SOBs, causing much hilarity among those more familiar with the
English language.
