integrity. Be careful when testing DVD-Rs, since some DVD-ROM
drives have problems reading DVD-Rs and will report errors that will
not be present on a check disc or the final replicated copies.
■ If you put Macintosh files on the disc, make sure that the icons display
properly and that the resource forks are still intact (use ResEdit or
similar utility). Check that the filenames are correct when played on a
Windows PC.
Table 12.7 is also provided to help you test QC issues on your project.
NOTE: Anyone serious about producing DVD-Video must invest in three
things: an expensive, high-quality monitor; a cheap TV; and a DVD PC.
Replication, Duplication, and Distribution
At this point, things are mostly out of your hands. Your DLT, representing
weeks or months or years of your life, is in the hands of someone else. Most
replicators have excellent processes in place and will take good care of your
project.
The replicator will use the DLT to cut a glass master and make stamping
masters. Some replicators first verify the DLT formatting and check for
spec compliance. The replicator will send you check discs made from the
master. Once you approve the check disc, then thousands or millions of
copies of your disc will be churned out. See Chapter 5 for technical details
of mastering and replication.
If you want to serialize the discs or put other custom information in the
BCA, a small number of replicators have the necessary equipment. If you
need to make less than a hundred discs, you may want to use DVD-R duplication
instead. You can burn DVDs by hand, buy a DVD-R bulk-duplication
system, or have a service bureau duplicate the discs.
Most replicators can do source tagging: inserting electronic article surveillance
(EAS) labels into packaging. The two most popular source tagging
technologies are acousto-magnetic tags from Sensormatic and RF tags from
Checkpoint Systems.
