To provide for longer playing times without compromising audio quality,<br />

Meridian Lossless Packing (MLP) can be used to compress the data. MLP<br />

removes redundancy from the signal to achieve a compression ratio of about<br />

2:1 while allowing the PCM signal to be completely recreated by the MLP<br />

decoder. <strong>DVD</strong>-Audio players are required to include an MLP decoder.<br />

The other audio formats of <strong>DVD</strong>-Video (Dolby Digital, MPEG audio, and<br />

DTS) are optional on <strong>DVD</strong>-Audio discs, although Dolby Digital is required<br />

for audio content that has associated video. A subset of <strong>DVD</strong>-Video features<br />

is allowed; those that are not are listed in Table 6.40. See Table 6.41 for compression<br />

ratios and Table 6.42 for playing times.<br />

Sampling rates and sizes can vary for different channels by using a predefined<br />

set of two groups; as shown in Table 6.43. For mono and stereo configurations,<br />

there is only one group. For other configurations, there are two<br />

groups. Group 1 always has sampling rates and sizes that are higher than<br />

or the same as group 2. Note that channel configurations 8 to 12 are the<br />

same as 13 to 17, other than the channel groupings. Groups apply to PCM<br />

streams and MLP streams.<br />
