up to five times. After that, it can’t be changed again unless the vendor or
manufacturer resets the drive. RPC2 moves region management into the
drive hardware where it’s more secure and more easily controlled.
An RPC2 drive has four region states that can be queried and set by the
host computer:
■ None: The drive region has not been set. The computer must set the
initial region before playing discs with region information. When the
region is first set, the region-setting counter goes from 5 to 4.
■ Set: The drive region has been set. The region-setting counter will
decrement on each change until it reaches 1.
■ Last chance: The region-setting counter is 1, and the drive region can
be set only one more time. In order to change to a new region, it must
be the same as an inserted single-region disc.
■ Permanent: The region-setting counter is 0, and the region can no
longer be changed. At this point, the drive region can be reinitialized
by the vendor to the None state.
