panied by any. If <strong>it</strong> proves satisfac<strong>to</strong>ry, <strong>it</strong> may<br />
be finished at once; or if not qu<strong>it</strong>e pleasing <strong>to</strong><br />
the s<strong>it</strong>ter, <strong>it</strong> may be placed in a rack <strong>and</strong> an-<br />
other plate prepared <strong>and</strong> exposed in the same<br />
manner as before, introducing such changes as<br />
the s<strong>it</strong>ter may suggest as desirable, always taking<br />
care <strong>to</strong> ascertain the exact nature of the change<br />
required, unless <strong>it</strong> is qu<strong>it</strong>e apparent <strong>to</strong> yourself<br />
from the defects of the picture already made. In<br />
such case, <strong>it</strong> becomes the duty of the opera<strong>to</strong>r<br />
<strong>to</strong> himself as well as the lady—<strong>to</strong> <strong>make</strong> another<br />
s<strong>it</strong>ting, suggesting <strong>and</strong> making such alterations<br />
as may appear desirable.<br />
A satisfac<strong>to</strong>ry picture having been secured, <strong>it</strong><br />
should be thoroughly washed, taken <strong>to</strong> the dry-<br />
ing s<strong>to</strong>ve, <strong>and</strong> the water evaporated from <strong>it</strong>s sur-<br />
face by heat. All Ferrotypes are, or should be,<br />
colored or tinted, which is done by applying<br />
finely pulverized dry colors <strong>to</strong> the pictures w<strong>it</strong>h<br />
a soft camels hair pencil brush. Ordinarily only<br />
the cheeks <strong>and</strong> lips are tinted, which takes but<br />
a few moments as the color is applied quickly,<br />
the brush being ])ressed more closely <strong>to</strong> the<br />
parts where the color is <strong>to</strong> be strongest. <strong>The</strong><br />
surplus color is then brushed off w<strong>it</strong>h a soft<br />
blender, which also blends the color on the<br />
cheeks from the highest softly down <strong>to</strong> those<br />
parts requiring none at all. After the coloring<br />
the }»ictures are varnished, <strong>and</strong> again subjected<br />
<strong>to</strong> heat, unless the varnish is of a self-drying<br />
nature. Most Ferrotype varnishes require a<br />
