<strong>to</strong> offend the sfense of the laws of grav<strong>it</strong>y, the<br />
artistic, or the beautiful. If the view is of an<br />
outside character^ atteution must be given <strong>to</strong> those<br />
parts requiring more prominence than others,<br />
that they be placed so as <strong>to</strong> receive <strong>it</strong>, <strong>and</strong> that<br />
the character of the illumination shall not al<strong>to</strong>-<br />
gether belie the effect of the picture ;<br />
or, in other<br />
words, that the illumination may be from the<br />
same general direction for the ground <strong>and</strong> sub-<br />
ject, <strong>and</strong> not, as were the celebrated or rather<br />
no<strong>to</strong>rious ^' spir<strong>it</strong> pho<strong>to</strong>graphs,^' made at one<br />
time in New York, by a man named Mumler,<br />
the lighting of his s<strong>it</strong>ter being in one direction,<br />
<strong>and</strong> illumination of the picture of the ^^spir<strong>it</strong>"<br />
(supposed <strong>to</strong> be of some relation,) from a contrary<br />
direction, producing a very incongruous effect<br />
indeed, <strong>and</strong> giving rise <strong>to</strong> as<strong>to</strong>nishment in the<br />
mind that people should be found so grossly<br />
credulous as <strong>to</strong> be imposed upon by such trickery.
