THE FERROTYPE.<br />
first formula will produce a Collodion that will<br />
cover a mult<strong>it</strong>ude of defects:<br />
Iodide of Ammonium 30 grains;<br />
Iodide of Sodium<br />
10<br />
Iodide of Cadmium<br />
20<br />
Bromide of Cadmium 20<br />
1 Ether <strong>and</strong> Alcohol Soz.each;<br />
Gun-cot<strong>to</strong>n, (say)<br />
G<strong>to</strong>Sgrs.<br />
Or enough <strong>to</strong> <strong>make</strong> the Collodion as thick as may be, tc<br />
flow evenly <strong>and</strong> smoothly over the plate.<br />
I have found <strong>it</strong> highly beneficial <strong>to</strong> vary the<br />
proportions according <strong>to</strong> the season. During cold<br />
weather I use a greater proportion of ether, <strong>and</strong><br />
when the weather is very warm I use less ether<br />
<strong>and</strong> more alcohol, ever varying the proportions<br />
<strong>to</strong> su<strong>it</strong> the season. In the same way <strong>it</strong> is well <strong>to</strong><br />
use less bromide during the summer season, when<br />
the sunlight is diffused—for instance, in July <strong>and</strong><br />
August <strong>it</strong> would be well <strong>to</strong> <strong>make</strong> up a sample<br />
thus<br />

It may be well <strong>to</strong> observe that caution is nec-<br />
essary in the use of an over proportion of alco-<br />
hol, from the fact that <strong>it</strong> is likely <strong>to</strong> render th£<br />
Collodion glutinous, <strong>and</strong> from <strong>it</strong>s solubil<strong>it</strong>y in<br />
water <strong>to</strong> sooner injure the bath. During cold<br />
weather the proportions may be varied the other
