VIUJSETTES, MEDALLIONS, ETC. 143<br />

be rapidly made <strong>to</strong> s<strong>how</strong> more or less of the<br />

figure by an adjustable st<strong>and</strong>, so that all varieties<br />

can be produced w<strong>it</strong>h the greatest facil<strong>it</strong>y.<br />

<strong>The</strong> usual method of adjustment is <strong>to</strong> st<strong>and</strong><br />

w<strong>it</strong>h the vignette in the h<strong>and</strong>, having placed <strong>it</strong><br />

at what you consider the proper place, <strong>and</strong> look<br />

over the edge of the opening in<strong>to</strong> the camera ^o as<br />

not <strong>to</strong> obstruct the reflection of the s<strong>it</strong>ter. One<br />

will' easily see from that pos<strong>it</strong>ion if the Vignette<br />

is <strong>to</strong>o high or <strong>to</strong>o low, or if <strong>to</strong>o much <strong>to</strong><br />

the right or left; by moving <strong>it</strong> nearer <strong>to</strong> the<br />

camera the opening is enlarged, s<strong>how</strong>ing more<br />

of the figure, while by placing <strong>it</strong> nearer <strong>to</strong> the<br />

s<strong>it</strong>ter the blending becomes more abrupt <strong>and</strong> the<br />

opening smaller, embracing the shoulders closely.<br />

Vio-nettes can also be made two or three in a<br />

group, by having the opening sufficiently large<br />

or by placing <strong>it</strong> nearer the camera. <strong>The</strong>re are a<br />

variety of useful openings, among which are the<br />

round, egg-shape, <strong>and</strong> half circle. All of these<br />

are <strong>to</strong> be used w<strong>it</strong>h wh<strong>it</strong>e grounds. <strong>The</strong>y can,<br />

<strong>how</strong>ever, be used w<strong>it</strong>h gray grounds, sometimes<br />

w<strong>it</strong>h very good effect.<br />

To <strong>make</strong> Vignettes by this apparatus, <strong>it</strong> should<br />

be the endeavor of the opera<strong>to</strong>r <strong>to</strong> have the same<br />

amount of intens<strong>it</strong>y of light on the Vignette as<br />

on the back-ground, in order that they may be<br />

of the same shade or <strong>to</strong>ne in the finished picture.<br />

This is easily done by turning the Vignette <strong>to</strong>-<br />

ward the light, e<strong>it</strong>her <strong>to</strong>p or side, although <strong>it</strong> is<br />

generally better <strong>to</strong> turn <strong>it</strong> <strong>to</strong>ward the <strong>to</strong>p light
