<strong>The</strong> solution of n<strong>it</strong>rate of silver used by pho-<br />

<strong>to</strong>graphers for the preparation of sens<strong>it</strong>ized sur-<br />

faces, or surfaces rendered sens<strong>it</strong>ive <strong>to</strong> the action<br />

of light by the depos<strong>it</strong>ion thereon, upon immer-<br />

sion in the silver solution of certain salts of sil<br />

ver, such as iodides or bromides of that metal, is<br />

the most important solution claiming the atten-<br />

tion of the pho<strong>to</strong>grapher.<br />

<strong>The</strong> formulas for the preparation of such a<br />

solution are almost innumerable, <strong>and</strong> they are as<br />

diverse as are the minds of their authors or in-<br />

ven<strong>to</strong>rs, <strong>and</strong> <strong>it</strong> would appear that minds of no<br />

ordinary inventive powers have been engaged in<br />

such labors, judging from published formulas,<br />

which may be found in every library of pho<strong>to</strong>-<br />

graphic works.<br />

'he preparation of a silver solution or bath,<br />

<strong>how</strong>ever, is a matter of no small importance, as<br />

upon <strong>it</strong>s successful operation depends all the in-<br />

terests of the establishment. <strong>The</strong> perfect opera-<br />

tion of the silver bath is a matter of primary<br />

importance <strong>to</strong> the opera<strong>to</strong>r, no matter <strong>how</strong> <strong>it</strong><br />

may be prepared, or by what formula.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re are various methods used in the prepa-<br />

ration of n<strong>it</strong>rate of silver by manufacturing<br />

chemists—each one may have his own favor<strong>it</strong>e<br />

process. One firm may take pleasure in pro-<br />

ducing a qual<strong>it</strong>y that shall be remarkable for<br />

the beauty <strong>and</strong> size of <strong>it</strong>s crystals; another, for
