Convention," in Philadelphia, in 1871, the wr<strong>it</strong>er<br />

exhib<strong>it</strong>ed in a very quiet manner an album full<br />

of his productions in these two sizes they ex-<br />

c<strong>it</strong>ed the utmost admiration, <strong>and</strong> increased im-<br />

mensely the respect of some of the members for<br />

the Ferrotype.<br />

But <strong>it</strong> was in the shape of the " Gem " Ferro-<br />

type that the greatest number of these pictures<br />

have been sold. <strong>The</strong>se ^^Gems'^ are made by<br />

the multiplying camera w<strong>it</strong>h four or more lenses,<br />

<strong>and</strong> two or more consecutive exposures, <strong>and</strong> they<br />

differ in size from that of sixteen on a quarter<br />

plate <strong>to</strong> four on the same. <strong>The</strong>y are made very<br />

quickly <strong>and</strong> sold very cheaply, ranging from ten<br />

cents the dozen, unmounted, <strong>to</strong> fifty cents w<strong>it</strong>h<br />

paper mounts.<br />

<strong>The</strong> wr<strong>it</strong>er has made of these, w<strong>it</strong>h his own<br />

h<strong>and</strong>s, as many as one hundred <strong>and</strong> twenty dozen<br />

in one day, <strong>and</strong> sold every dozen at fifty cents,<br />

never having before or since sold a dozen for<br />

less.<br />

<strong>The</strong>se })ictures have a peculiar interest <strong>to</strong> the<br />

children, <strong>and</strong> in the c<strong>it</strong>ies <strong>it</strong> is impossible <strong>to</strong><br />

compute the number or quant<strong>it</strong>ies which have<br />

been made <strong>and</strong> sold since 1860. I suppose <strong>it</strong><br />

would exceed that of all other pictures put <strong>to</strong>-<br />

gether.<br />

As a branch of Pho<strong>to</strong>graphy, 'the production<br />

of Ferrotypes has now attained <strong>to</strong> such magni-<br />

tude that large establishments are f<strong>it</strong>ted up <strong>and</strong>
