matters of no great importance beyond a certain<br />

point; that is, the <strong>to</strong>p light should not be less<br />

than twelve feet square, the side being ot the<br />

same width, extending from the <strong>to</strong>p <strong>to</strong> w<strong>it</strong>hin a<br />

foot of the floor. In some galleries the lights<br />

are exceedingly large, such as a length of 40<br />

feet w<strong>it</strong>h a breadth of 20 feet from the <strong>to</strong>p, ana<br />

an equal length for the side—such an immense<br />

area of glass is superfluous, as indeed may be<br />

proved by work made in glass rooms of moderate<br />

size. <strong>The</strong>re is no better work produced than in<br />

the galleries of New York, in no one of which<br />

is there a light of greater dimensions than 16<br />

feet, <strong>and</strong> some of the best have even less. <strong>The</strong><br />

light used by Mr. Kurtz, of New York, is the<br />

combined <strong>to</strong>p <strong>and</strong> side w<strong>it</strong>h northern exposure,<br />

the <strong>to</strong>p being placed at an angle of 45°, is 10<br />

feet square, on which joins the side light, 10 feet<br />

by 8 feet extending <strong>to</strong> the floor.<br />

While the northern exposure is by far the best<br />

for pho<strong>to</strong>graphic purposes, <strong>it</strong> does not, nor can <strong>it</strong><br />

be constructed so as <strong>to</strong> exclude the sunlight;<br />

various devices have been resorted <strong>to</strong> by diflerent<br />

opera<strong>to</strong>rs <strong>to</strong> obviate this difficulty, among whi(;h<br />

board screens, awnings worked by pulleys from<br />

the inside, <strong>and</strong>, lately, a form of blind similar <strong>to</strong><br />

the common outside window blinds w<strong>it</strong>h mova-<br />

ble slats has been adopted, <strong>and</strong> found <strong>to</strong> be a<br />

euccess—the slats are light frames of wood,<br />

working on center pivots, <strong>and</strong> covered w<strong>it</strong>h<br />

iBuslin, »??iivas, or. indeed, made entirely of
