pho<strong>to</strong>grapher is a blessing, must he deny him-<br />
self the prof<strong>it</strong> he hopes <strong>to</strong> derive, <strong>and</strong> the<br />
happiness he expects <strong>to</strong> confer, by the exercise<br />
of his art, because he can not have the advanta-<br />
ges of the best style of light? I say, no! rather<br />
let him adapt himself <strong>to</strong> the circumstances, <strong>and</strong><br />
<strong>make</strong> the best use of the facil<strong>it</strong>ies procurable,<br />
than <strong>to</strong> disappoint a commun<strong>it</strong>y, some of whom,<br />
the meanest effort of his art might render inex-<br />
pressibly happy.<br />
It is certain that the clever opera<strong>to</strong>r will<br />
sometimes <strong>make</strong> good pictures under the most<br />
unfavorable circumstances; in many cases diffi-<br />
culties only stimulate <strong>to</strong> ingenu<strong>it</strong>y in overcoming<br />
them, <strong>and</strong> in no instance known <strong>to</strong> the wr<strong>it</strong>er is<br />
there a greater dem<strong>and</strong> for those qual<strong>it</strong>ies of in-<br />
vention <strong>and</strong> ingenu<strong>it</strong>y, which enables their pos-<br />
sessor <strong>to</strong> rise superior <strong>to</strong> every difficulty, than in<br />
the practice of pho<strong>to</strong>graphy, in any of <strong>it</strong>s branches,<br />
under a small <strong>to</strong>p light or beside a window in<br />
Bome lonely, out-of-the-way place, where the peo-<br />
ple are all sunburnt <strong>and</strong> rough-skinned, <strong>and</strong> even<br />
the pretty girls are sadly tanned by exposure <strong>to</strong><br />
the weather.<br />
<strong>The</strong> effect of a light falling from above, upon<br />
the features of a s<strong>it</strong>ter directly under <strong>it</strong>, would<br />
