them out if we may. How shall we proceed?<br />

If we illuminate him by side light alone, we shall<br />

<strong>make</strong> every perpendicular line a furrow, if by<br />

<strong>to</strong>p light, we shall produce the same effect w<strong>it</strong>h<br />

the horizontal lines. We should, indeed, give him<br />

"the furrowed brow, the wrinkled front of age,"<br />

w<strong>it</strong>h a venoeance. Rather let us move the back-<br />

ground <strong>and</strong> seat the gentleman facing the light,<br />

directly or nearly so; the light will now tend <strong>to</strong><br />

render less prominent the signs of age, by light-<br />

ing equally the depressions <strong>and</strong> the projections.<br />

Some skill will be required <strong>to</strong> relieve the eye,<br />

but a l<strong>it</strong>tle thought will not fail <strong>to</strong> suggest<br />

the proper means.<br />

As a general rule, <strong>it</strong> is proper <strong>to</strong> take front<br />

views of all persons who are " hollow-cheeked,"<br />

or have long faces, <strong>and</strong> three-quarter views or<br />

profiles for those who have round full moon<br />

faces, or who are very fleshy. <strong>The</strong>re are many<br />

exceptions <strong>to</strong> such a rule as the above, as for ex-<br />

ample, a long faced person whose cheeks are not<br />

sunken, a three-quarter view may give a very<br />

h<strong>and</strong>some oval, <strong>and</strong> frequently round faced fleshy<br />

persons will not bear a three-quarter or profile<br />

view.<br />

By a course of studying the faces that come<br />

before the opera<strong>to</strong>r, he will acquire the abil<strong>it</strong>y<br />

<strong>to</strong> decide almost immediately, on viewing the<br />

subject, as <strong>to</strong> the best <strong>and</strong> most favorable pose of<br />

the figure, <strong>and</strong> view of the face. This is the<br />

only means whereby such a knowledge can be
