w<strong>it</strong>h alcohol. Set the bottle away for a few days,<br />
giving <strong>it</strong> a gojd shaking once in awhile; after the<br />
gum has dissolved <strong>and</strong> settled, decant the clear<br />
portion, after testing, <strong>to</strong> learn if <strong>it</strong> is thick enough;<br />
if not shake up <strong>and</strong> allow <strong>to</strong> st<strong>and</strong>—if <strong>to</strong>o thick,<br />
dilute w<strong>it</strong>h alcohol <strong>and</strong> use. By keeping the s<strong>to</strong>ck<br />
bottle full, adding new shellac as required, you<br />
have, w<strong>it</strong>h very l<strong>it</strong>tle trouble, a fine qual<strong>it</strong>y of<br />
varnish, giving w<strong>it</strong>h a gentle heat as fine a gloss<br />
<strong>to</strong> your work as any <strong>it</strong> is possible <strong>to</strong> <strong>make</strong>.<br />
Now, that the picture is dry, cut apart; if more<br />
than one, trim the edges, mount or place in envel-<br />
opes, <strong>and</strong> they are ready <strong>to</strong> deliver.<br />
CHAPTER V.<br />
THE DARK ROOM.<br />
<strong>The</strong> "dark room,'^ as <strong>it</strong> is generally denomi-<br />
nated, should not be in real<strong>it</strong>y a dark room, <strong>it</strong> being<br />
onl}'^ necessary <strong>to</strong> exclude the actinic rays of light.<br />
Light, then, may be adm<strong>it</strong>ted <strong>to</strong> any extent through<br />
colored glass, if that color is non-actinic. <strong>The</strong><br />
best glass for this purpose is orange or yellow ;<br />
the<br />
whole room may be made of glass of this color, <strong>and</strong><br />
the work proceed w<strong>it</strong>hout injury <strong>to</strong> the most sensi-<br />
tive film. Care must always be taken <strong>to</strong> exclude all<br />
wh<strong>it</strong>e light—no cracks should be left open, doors
