"Double Iodides, 5 <strong>to</strong> 6 grains <strong>to</strong> oi.<br />
Double Bromides, or<br />
Bromide of Cadmium 2J grains <strong>to</strong> oz.<br />
Alcohol <strong>and</strong> Ether (equal parts)<br />
Cot<strong>to</strong>n about 6 grains <strong>to</strong> oz.<br />
" I believe the double iodides <strong>to</strong> be far superior<br />
tc the simple iodides. I should like <strong>to</strong> have others<br />
try tliem, <strong>and</strong> should like <strong>to</strong> hear what they think<br />
of them."<br />
<strong>The</strong> two following formulas will produce the<br />
best Collodion for Ferrotypes I have ever used,<br />
<strong>and</strong> I would recommend them as worthy of trial<br />
by every Ferrotypist who shall read this book.<br />
<strong>The</strong> first I have used for fully eight years ; the<br />
second I have lately adopted<br />
Alcohol <strong>and</strong> Ether 5 ozs. each.<br />
Gun-cot<strong>to</strong>n, <strong>to</strong> <strong>make</strong> of su<strong>it</strong>able consist-<br />
ency, <strong>to</strong> be immersed in Ether before<br />
the Alcohol is added :<br />
To every 10 ozs. of plain Collodion add<br />
Iodide of Ammonium 40 grains;<br />
Iodide of Cadmium .,...* 20 grains;<br />
Bromide of Cadmium 20 grains.<br />
This Collodion can be used as soon as <strong>it</strong> has<br />
settled sufficiently clear, <strong>and</strong> will keep exceedingly<br />
well. <strong>The</strong> other is equally good, but in some<br />
respects <strong>it</strong> is different, requiring more skill in <strong>it</strong>s<br />
use. It is more transparent than the first, <strong>and</strong><br />
will not, therefore, cover the defects on the sur-<br />
face of the plate ; in fact <strong>it</strong> can not be used on<br />
plates which have been cleaned, or that are<br />
scratched or stained on the surface, whereas the<br />
