of ligl<strong>it</strong> <strong>to</strong> give brilliancy <strong>to</strong> the eye, defin<strong>it</strong>ion<br />
<strong>to</strong> the drapery, etc., etc. A horizontal light <strong>to</strong><br />
give strength <strong>and</strong> solid<strong>it</strong>y, <strong>and</strong> <strong>to</strong> soften the<br />
shadows under the chin, nose, eyebrows, etc.<br />
A light which will perm<strong>it</strong> the opera<strong>to</strong>r <strong>to</strong><br />
cbtain from each face <strong>it</strong>s best view <strong>and</strong> also <strong>it</strong>s<br />
most characteristic expression.<br />
A light which can be modified <strong>to</strong> su<strong>it</strong> the<br />
varying requirements of different faces, <strong>and</strong> can<br />
be made a perpendicular, horizontal, or oblique<br />
light at will ; in short, a light which will<br />
facil<strong>it</strong>ate a regular <strong>and</strong> continued success on the<br />
part of the opera<strong>to</strong>r.<br />
<strong>The</strong>re are, distinctively, but two kinds of<br />
lights, viz., the perpendicular or <strong>to</strong>p light which<br />
comes from above, <strong>and</strong> the horizontal or side<br />
light, that which comes from an opening or<br />
window in the side of a perpendicular wall.<br />
Ne<strong>it</strong>her of these two lights, separately, would<br />
meet the requirements above mentioned; but<br />
when built <strong>to</strong>gether, the lower end of the <strong>to</strong>p<br />
resting upon the side light, they compose that<br />
particular form of light which the best pho<strong>to</strong>g-<br />
raphers all over the country, <strong>and</strong> the world, per-<br />
haps, have generally agreed upon as the best<br />
<strong>and</strong> only in this shape, w<strong>it</strong>h a northern expos-<br />
ure, can the varied requirements already specified<br />
be fully met.<br />
<strong>The</strong>re are many instances, <strong>how</strong>ever, of the<br />
impossibil<strong>it</strong>y of securing the advantages of the<br />
