"This metal may be termed a pho<strong>to</strong>graphic<br />

but for <strong>it</strong>s existence, all the interesting phenomena<br />
connected w<strong>it</strong>h pho<strong>to</strong>graphy would never<br />
have been observed."<br />
Among the various metals, silver holds the<br />
second place in value <strong>and</strong> usefulness. It is also<br />
regarded as one of the noble metals, because of <strong>it</strong>s<br />
resistance <strong>to</strong> the action of atmospheric air <strong>and</strong> of<br />
fire. It is described as a soft, wh<strong>it</strong>e, metallic<br />
element, very malleable <strong>and</strong> ductile, <strong>and</strong> capable<br />
of a high polish. Its specific grav<strong>it</strong>y is 10.8, or<br />
nearly eleven times as heavy as water. It occurs<br />
pure in nature, <strong>and</strong> also in combination w<strong>it</strong>h<br />
sulphur, arsenic, etc., <strong>and</strong> w<strong>it</strong>h ores of lead,<br />
co]>j)er, <strong>and</strong> gold. It is found in veins, rarely in<br />
beds, in crystalline slate rocks, gneiss, mica slate,<br />
hornblende, slate, gran<strong>it</strong>e, syen<strong>it</strong>e, porphyry.<br />
It is mined extensively in Norway, Sweden,<br />
Saxony, Bohemia, Hungary, Transylvania, Si-<br />
beria, the Hartz, Baden, Tyrol, France, Engl<strong>and</strong>,<br />
Chili, Peru, Mexico, <strong>and</strong> in many parts of the<br />
