The Group also launched its new parent company charitable giv<strong>in</strong>g<br />
programme dur<strong>in</strong>g the year to complement and enhance the<br />
community and charitable activities of its operat<strong>in</strong>g bus<strong>in</strong>esses. This<br />
new approach is <strong>in</strong>tended to lend strength and scale to the ef orts<br />
already made by our bus<strong>in</strong>esses and sites at a local level and make a<br />
real and susta<strong>in</strong>able diference to <strong>in</strong>itiatives with<strong>in</strong> our <strong>in</strong>dustry and to<br />
the communities <strong>in</strong> which our employees live and work.<br />
Under the programme, <strong>BBA</strong> <strong>Aviation</strong> employees can, on behalf<br />
of a charity or not for proft organisation, apply to the <strong>BBA</strong> <strong>Aviation</strong><br />
Charitable Giv<strong>in</strong>g Committee for a cash donation. In l<strong>in</strong>e with the<br />
Community Involvement and Charitable Giv<strong>in</strong>g Framework, priority is<br />
given to charities and not for proft organisations with a strong and<br />
current local connection to one of our sites and preference is given to<br />
organisations connected with aviation, eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g or education.<br />
Decisions on which organisations to support are made by the <strong>BBA</strong><br />
<strong>Aviation</strong> Charitable Giv<strong>in</strong>g Committee, which has representatives from<br />
each of the operat<strong>in</strong>g bus<strong>in</strong>esses and cross-functional representation.<br />
Dur<strong>in</strong>g the year donations totall<strong>in</strong>g £150,000 have been made by <strong>BBA</strong><br />
<strong>Aviation</strong> under this programme to charities and not for proft<br />
organisations supported by our employees.<br />
The follow<strong>in</strong>g are illustrative of the charitable donations made<br />
through this programme dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>2010</strong>:<br />
Pr<strong>in</strong>cess Alice Hospice is a UK hospice charity with close l<strong>in</strong>ks to<br />
ASIG Europe through its UK corporate ofce. This donation of £8,250<br />
will fund 95 visits of a community nurse to patients <strong>in</strong> the area.<br />
Frontiers of Flight Museum <strong>in</strong> Texas is a National Air & Space Museum<br />
afliate that uses aviation as a means of promot<strong>in</strong>g education <strong>in</strong><br />
science, eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, maths and technology to young people <strong>in</strong> the<br />
Dallas-Fort Worth area. Dallas Airmotive has been support<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
Museum s<strong>in</strong>ce 2004 and this donation of $23,550 has, among other<br />
th<strong>in</strong>gs, made it possible for the Museum to <strong>in</strong>crease by 22% the<br />
number of students participat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> their school tours <strong>in</strong> the autumn<br />
term of <strong>2010</strong>.<br />
Of the Record is an outreach and drop-<strong>in</strong> organisation with two<br />
centres support<strong>in</strong>g disadvantaged young people <strong>in</strong> the Havant/<br />
Portsmouth area, UK. An Aero Eng<strong>in</strong>e Technician at H+S <strong>Aviation</strong>, one<br />
of the ERO bus<strong>in</strong>esses, has been a volunteer counsellor for the<br />
organisation s<strong>in</strong>ce 2001 and H+S <strong>Aviation</strong> supported the organisation<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>2010</strong> by donat<strong>in</strong>g employee time and materials to assist <strong>in</strong> the<br />
refurbish<strong>in</strong>g of one of its centres. <strong>BBA</strong> <strong>Aviation</strong>’s donation of<br />
£15,000 will be used to provide further tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and support for Of the<br />
Record volunteers.<br />
Jason Naugle Memorial Scholarship Foundation funds scholarships<br />
for young people from the local community of M<strong>in</strong>neapolis-Sa<strong>in</strong>t Paul<br />
who wish to pursue a career <strong>in</strong> aviation and has been supported by<br />
local Signature employees s<strong>in</strong>ce 1999. This donation of $10,000 will<br />
fund additional scholarships for the next two years.<br />
Fondation des Hôpitaux de Paris-Hôpitaux de France is a charitable<br />
organisation dedicated to improv<strong>in</strong>g the experience of people<br />
need<strong>in</strong>g long-term hospital treatment and their families. Employees at<br />
Signature Paris Le Bourget have been support<strong>in</strong>g the charity <strong>in</strong> a<br />
variety of ways and this donation of €20,000 will be used to build a<br />
computer room and fund workshops at a new hospital facility<br />
especially for teenagers near the Le Bourget base.<br />
CSR Governance and <strong>Report</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />
Responsibility to the Board for relationships with all our stakeholders<br />
lies with the Group Chief Executive. Mark Harper, a non-executive<br />
director, is <strong>BBA</strong> <strong>Aviation</strong>’s CSR Responsible Director. The Group Health,<br />
Safety and Environment Director, Kimberly Tuyn reports directly to the<br />
Group Chief Executive and is responsible for deliver<strong>in</strong>g our Group<br />
Health, Safety and Environment strategy; the Group HR Director,<br />
Mart<strong>in</strong> Filippides has responsibility for ensur<strong>in</strong>g HR matters are<br />
co-ord<strong>in</strong>ated at a Group level while the Group Secretary, Zillah Stone,<br />
has Group-level oversight of CSR activities through chair<strong>in</strong>g the CSR<br />
Steer<strong>in</strong>g Committee. This Steer<strong>in</strong>g Committee, which <strong>in</strong>cludes<br />
representatives from our ma<strong>in</strong> operat<strong>in</strong>g companies as well as these<br />
functional representatives, provides a focus for CSR <strong>in</strong>itiatives with<strong>in</strong><br />
the Group. Members take an active role <strong>in</strong> promot<strong>in</strong>g CSR and<br />
<strong>in</strong>fuenc<strong>in</strong>g change with<strong>in</strong> their <strong>in</strong>dividual bus<strong>in</strong>esses and functions<br />
and the Committee meets regularly to share best practice, generate<br />
new ideas and make recommendations for new <strong>in</strong>itiatives to the<br />
Executive Management Committee and to the Board.<br />
The Group’s Approach to CSR (set out on page 60) is a<br />
document that is reviewed annually by <strong>BBA</strong> <strong>Aviation</strong>’s Board and<br />
compliance is treated <strong>in</strong> the same manner as compliance with other<br />
<strong>BBA</strong> <strong>Aviation</strong>-wide guidel<strong>in</strong>es, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g be<strong>in</strong>g reviewed as part of the<br />
<strong>BBA</strong> <strong>Aviation</strong> Internal Audit Programme. Further details on the process<br />
for review of risks, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g health, safety, environmental and other<br />
operational risks are set out <strong>in</strong> item 1 of “Systems of Internal Control”<br />
on page 73.<br />
<strong>BBA</strong> <strong>Aviation</strong>’s Group Internal Audit team <strong>in</strong>cludes a number of<br />
questions on CSR matters <strong>in</strong> the annual Control Risk Assessment<br />
questionnaire which is completed by each of the operat<strong>in</strong>g bus<strong>in</strong>esses.<br />
The responses are reviewed and collated by Group Internal Audit and<br />
then discussed by the CSR Steer<strong>in</strong>g Committee and used <strong>in</strong> the<br />
development of future CSR action plans. One of the items discussed<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>2010</strong> was the consistency <strong>in</strong> approach and understand<strong>in</strong>g of<br />
CSR matters across all the Group’s bases and facilities and, as a<br />
consequence, one of the CSR Steer<strong>in</strong>g Committee’s projects <strong>in</strong> <strong>2010</strong><br />
was to pilot a CSR guidance manual to help support greater<br />
consistency. Related projects are be<strong>in</strong>g planned by the Committee,<br />
<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g look<strong>in</strong>g at ways of communicat<strong>in</strong>g the same key messages<br />
<strong>in</strong> diferent ways, such as posters, presentation slides and screen<br />
messages.<br />
We have been a member of the FTSE4Good <strong>in</strong>dex s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>BBA</strong><br />
<strong>Aviation</strong> plc was renamed after the demerger <strong>in</strong> 2006 and <strong>BBA</strong> Group plc<br />
had been a constituent of the <strong>in</strong>dex s<strong>in</strong>ce 2001. This <strong>in</strong>dex <strong>in</strong>corporates<br />
companies that meet globally recognised corporate responsibility<br />
standards. We also participate <strong>in</strong> the Carbon Disclosure Project.<br />
<strong>BBA</strong> <strong>Aviation</strong>’s 2009-10 Corporate Social Responsibility <strong>Report</strong><br />
can be found on the Company’s website www.bbaaviation.com. Once<br />
aga<strong>in</strong> we also produced a poster version of that CSR <strong>Report</strong> which was<br />
distributed to all our facilities and we plan to produce both a CSR<br />
<strong>Report</strong> and poster <strong>in</strong> 2011, as well as cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g to use CSR messages<br />
<strong>in</strong> regular employee shift brief ngs to support the focus on operat<strong>in</strong>g<br />
responsibly at all levels <strong>in</strong> our organisation and <strong>in</strong> alignment with our<br />
Group’s values.<br />
Directors’ <strong>Report</strong> — 63
