The Group also launched its new parent company charitable giving
programme during the year to complement and enhance the
community and charitable activities of its operating businesses. This
new approach is intended to lend strength and scale to the ef orts
already made by our businesses and sites at a local level and make a
real and sustainable diference to initiatives within our industry and to
the communities in which our employees live and work.
Under the programme, BBA Aviation employees can, on behalf
of a charity or not for proft organisation, apply to the BBA Aviation
Charitable Giving Committee for a cash donation. In line with the
Community Involvement and Charitable Giving Framework, priority is
given to charities and not for proft organisations with a strong and
current local connection to one of our sites and preference is given to
organisations connected with aviation, engineering or education.
Decisions on which organisations to support are made by the BBA
Aviation Charitable Giving Committee, which has representatives from
each of the operating businesses and cross-functional representation.
During the year donations totalling £150,000 have been made by BBA
Aviation under this programme to charities and not for proft
organisations supported by our employees.
The following are illustrative of the charitable donations made
through this programme during 2010:
Princess Alice Hospice is a UK hospice charity with close links to
ASIG Europe through its UK corporate ofce. This donation of £8,250
will fund 95 visits of a community nurse to patients in the area.
Frontiers of Flight Museum in Texas is a National Air & Space Museum
afliate that uses aviation as a means of promoting education in
science, engineering, maths and technology to young people in the
Dallas-Fort Worth area. Dallas Airmotive has been supporting the
Museum since 2004 and this donation of $23,550 has, among other
things, made it possible for the Museum to increase by 22% the
number of students participating in their school tours in the autumn
term of 2010.
Of the Record is an outreach and drop-in organisation with two
centres supporting disadvantaged young people in the Havant/
Portsmouth area, UK. An Aero Engine Technician at H+S Aviation, one
of the ERO businesses, has been a volunteer counsellor for the
organisation since 2001 and H+S Aviation supported the organisation
in 2010 by donating employee time and materials to assist in the
refurbishing of one of its centres. BBA Aviation’s donation of
£15,000 will be used to provide further training and support for Of the
Record volunteers.
Jason Naugle Memorial Scholarship Foundation funds scholarships
for young people from the local community of Minneapolis-Saint Paul
who wish to pursue a career in aviation and has been supported by
local Signature employees since 1999. This donation of $10,000 will
fund additional scholarships for the next two years.
Fondation des Hôpitaux de Paris-Hôpitaux de France is a charitable
organisation dedicated to improving the experience of people
needing long-term hospital treatment and their families. Employees at
Signature Paris Le Bourget have been supporting the charity in a
variety of ways and this donation of €20,000 will be used to build a
computer room and fund workshops at a new hospital facility
especially for teenagers near the Le Bourget base.
CSR Governance and Reporting
Responsibility to the Board for relationships with all our stakeholders
lies with the Group Chief Executive. Mark Harper, a non-executive
director, is BBA Aviation’s CSR Responsible Director. The Group Health,
Safety and Environment Director, Kimberly Tuyn reports directly to the
Group Chief Executive and is responsible for delivering our Group
Health, Safety and Environment strategy; the Group HR Director,
Martin Filippides has responsibility for ensuring HR matters are
co-ordinated at a Group level while the Group Secretary, Zillah Stone,
has Group-level oversight of CSR activities through chairing the CSR
Steering Committee. This Steering Committee, which includes
representatives from our main operating companies as well as these
functional representatives, provides a focus for CSR initiatives within
the Group. Members take an active role in promoting CSR and
infuencing change within their individual businesses and functions
and the Committee meets regularly to share best practice, generate
new ideas and make recommendations for new initiatives to the
Executive Management Committee and to the Board.
The Group’s Approach to CSR (set out on page 60) is a
document that is reviewed annually by BBA Aviation’s Board and
compliance is treated in the same manner as compliance with other
BBA Aviation-wide guidelines, including being reviewed as part of the
BBA Aviation Internal Audit Programme. Further details on the process
for review of risks, including health, safety, environmental and other
operational risks are set out in item 1 of “Systems of Internal Control”
on page 73.
BBA Aviation’s Group Internal Audit team includes a number of
questions on CSR matters in the annual Control Risk Assessment
questionnaire which is completed by each of the operating businesses.
The responses are reviewed and collated by Group Internal Audit and
then discussed by the CSR Steering Committee and used in the
development of future CSR action plans. One of the items discussed
in 2010 was the consistency in approach and understanding of
CSR matters across all the Group’s bases and facilities and, as a
consequence, one of the CSR Steering Committee’s projects in 2010
was to pilot a CSR guidance manual to help support greater
consistency. Related projects are being planned by the Committee,
including looking at ways of communicating the same key messages
in diferent ways, such as posters, presentation slides and screen
messages.
We have been a member of the FTSE4Good index since BBA
Aviation plc was renamed after the demerger in 2006 and BBA Group plc
had been a constituent of the index since 2001. This index incorporates
companies that meet globally recognised corporate responsibility
standards. We also participate in the Carbon Disclosure Project.
BBA Aviation’s 2009-10 Corporate Social Responsibility Report
can be found on the Company’s website www.bbaaviation.com. Once
again we also produced a poster version of that CSR Report which was
distributed to all our facilities and we plan to produce both a CSR
Report and poster in 2011, as well as continuing to use CSR messages
in regular employee shift brief ngs to support the focus on operating
responsibly at all levels in our organisation and in alignment with our
Group’s values.
